PEOPLE ARE HEADING TO SINGAPORES LARGEST GOURMET FARMERS MARKET FOR ITS ARTISANAL BITES — AND FUNKY INDUSTRIAL DECOR.

It’s no secret that Singaporeans love to eat and shop. Even better when it involves the thrill of the hunt, coupled with the unique and the unusual. Enter Pasar Bella, a new retail and dining offering that looks set to tick all the right boxes. Singapore’s first indoor multi-vendor gourmet farmer’s market, Pasar Bella is currently home to over 30 traders under one 30,000sqf roof. And here, it’s all about the experience.

Pasar Bella’s off-the-beaten-track locale lends itself to the whole experience, too. Set in an old, disused grandstand at the former Turf City in Bukit Timah, the large, warehouse-like

Pentagon Slashes C-5 Modernisation

THE US Air Force has pulled the plug on the long-standing scheme to re-engine its entire fleet of C-5 Galaxy airlifters and convert them to C-5M versions. The ‘M’ suffix signifies ‘modernised’.

Under the reliability enhancement and re-engining programme (RERP), antiquated General Electric TF39-GE-1C turbofan engines, which are costly to maintain and supply, are being replaced by new, General Electric CF6^0C2 engines. Air Force leaders badly wanted to put new engines on all Galaxys; the decision will force them to operate a fleet of C-5s with two engine types.

In November 2007, a quarterly Pentagon report confirmed what many had

Penning a retro style

WILL ROBERTS asks whether the latest Olympus PEN is as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside.

The first time I picked up an Olympus compact camera I fell in love with it. It was about 18 years ago and the camera was my uncle’s 35mm film mju. Even as a child, I remember being struck by its clever, slick design. I loved its pebble-like shape, its clamshell sliding action and the way the lens would come out with a pleasing zip. It felt rugged and ready for work.

Fast forward a few years, to the time

Peel yourself a settle

Twig furniture is experiencing a comeback in popularity. The first chair I found of this type had been exposed to the weather for many years on an open porch in the woods of central Maine. It was grey and weathered, but still comfortable and sturdy. The iron nails pinning the parts together had rusted and stained the wood, but held with firm tenacity. It was there, ready for rest, at the end of each hike.

This was the first chair I had seen like this and I assumed it had been made there. Since then. I’ve found two others so

PEAVEY

Composer Parlour Acoustic Guitar

Fancy a parlour guitar with a little more oomph that could also be a holiday buddy, but don’t want to sell a kidney? Peavey takes on the challenge. Review by Martin Wheeler

Although it’s a traditional wooden acoustic instrument, the genesis of the Composer can be traced back to 2010 when Peavey bought Composite Acoustics, a company specialising in carbon fibre and graphite instrument building. The first post-CA Peavey instruments were designed with features gleaned from the feedback of original Composite Acoustics players. The resulting top-end guitars were well-received, and it seems that some of the

PEAVEY Vypyr VIP-2 electric, acoustic & bass combo

Most guitarists cover electric and acoustic, and many play bass too: so how about an amp that can handle all three? Review by Richard Purvis.

About half a century ago the average impoverished band only had one amp between them, and would mess up their quiffs in fights over input sockets. Today, thankfully, guitarists have guitar amps, bassists have bass amps, and even acoustic players sometimes have their own backline. So why on earth would Peavey want to wind these three disparate strands back together again in one all-purpose amplifier?

Well, it could be handy for anyone who plays a

PEARL-BORDERED FRITILLARY

By Ian Ward

Camera: Canon EOS5D Mk II Lens: EF 180mm f/3.5LMacro

Exposure: l/125sec at f/11 (ISO 800)

Ian says: «This was taken in Bentley Wood in the New Forest. The small pearl-bordered fritillary had just emerged and it was a perfect specimen! I spent time searching for the butterfly in a good position with a clean background and used a higher ISO rating as I was handholding.»

LEE FROST: I’m used to being presented with images in Expert Critique that have obvious flaws, and it makes my job easier because I’ve got something to write about! But my immediate

PEACE AND QUIET WITH THE FLIP OF A SWITCH

Adding a power switch to an external drive

I bought my 80GB Maxtor Personal Storage 1394 drive with a plan for it to act as an offline file server and backup depository.

To my surprise, there was no power switch on the unit. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that any product that isn’t required to be on all the time should provide some method for the user to turn it or and off. Maxtor’s design decision didn’t make sen se to me, so it was time to take matters into my own hands.

Since I only use the

PCIe x8 vs. PCIe x16

PCI express expansion slots vary in both physical size and the amount of bandwidth they provide. The really long slots are called x16 slots, as they provide 16 lanes of PCIe bandwidth, and that’s where our video cards go, for obvious reasons. Almost all of the top slots in a motherboard (those closest to the CPU) are x16, but sometimes those 16 lanes are divided between two slots, so what might look like a x16 slot is actually a x8 slot. The tricky part is that sometimes the slots below the top slot only offer eight lanes of PCIe bandwidth,
